Release Ganga from the Gangaramaya Buddhist temple
Ganga is an approximately 12 year old temple elephant living at the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She was stolen as a baby from her mother in the wild. The temple then forged her papers and she has been held illegally ever since. She now spends her life chained with very little room to move. Two years ago there was a court order issued for her to be removed from the temple, however due to corruption, she was never removed. A court date was set to hear her case, but again due to corruption, it has been delayed over and over again. We are asking the president of Sri Lanka to intervene and uphold the court order and remove her from the temple and release her to a sanctuary.
In the picture above, she is sleeping while chained in her own urine and excrement. This is absolutely disgraceful!
Save Myan Prince from torture
Mayan prince was a gift from Myanmar to Srilankan government and he was then given to the Bellanwila temple.
Wumalarathana thero was the chief monk at the temple then and as the Myan Prince grew up to to be a young tusker, he became little unpredictable may be due to hormonal changes in his body. When elephants get in musth their behaviour changes completely and become very unpredictable and violent.
Just like humans elephant have different personalities. Some can be very stubborn by nature some are not so. Specially a massive animal like this to tie down to trees and live in shackles his entire life is very wrong as an average elephant usually walks around 30 kilometres a day. Elephants are very intelligent animals with very strong memory power and they have similar emotions just like humans. In short, it's very inhuman to keep a very active massive living being in captivity for his entire life, knowing and studied all their behavioural patters by us humans.
The chief monk of the temple was one day had a very unfortunate fatal interaction with Myan Prince as he tried to feed him some food. The monk was knocked over by Mayan prince, and later in the hospital he passed away.
Then came the monks 's own brother Dhammarathana thero who is now the chief at the temple.
And lately its been observed by people and animal activist groups that Myan Prince is being harassed and illtreated in a very unacceptable and very cruel manner. There are video footages of some instances where he is tied down to trees streching his body from all sides, and he is crying out for help.
Currently there is no properly active animal bill in Srilanka due to objections from meat industry and Perahera or the religious possession organisers in the country and massive delay on the admin side of different government departments . The animal bill challenged and is pending at the courts for years and years, and the Government is not bothered about it as the culprits are very powerful , wealthy and very influential.
We poor animal sympathisers are internally crying over these incidents and basically our cries for help falls on deaf ears.
Please, please we urge all the animal lovers to sign this petition and share as much as possible for the Srilankan government to take Myan Prince back uder government custody and give him more space and freedom as this animal is now traumatised and stressed and to avoid another tragedy. When elephants had a bad experience they remember it for decades and Myan Prince is not easy to train , plz just send him to a government orphanage and let him have a peaceful life than torturing poor animal.
KIND APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF SRI LANKA AND ITS PRESIDENT::: please enact the animal welfare bill. You are known to get things done quickly and effectively.
Thanks, Nilmini Welivita on behalf of all the animal lovers in Srilanka
Free Nazanin Ratcliffe
My wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 37 year old charity worker, was on holiday visiting her family in Iran. She was at the airport returning to the UK on the 3rd April when she was detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. She has been transferred to an unknown location in Kerman Province, 1,000 kilometres south of Tehran, and is being held in solitary confinement.
Gabriella Ratcliffe our 22 month old daughter (who has British citizenship only) has had her British passport confiscated, and is stranded in Iran with her grandparents.
Nazanin has not been allowed to access a lawyer or her daughter. She has not been able to call out of the country to speak to me, her British husband, and the Red Cross have not been able to make contact.
There have been no charges. Nazanin has informed her family that she has been required to sign a confession under duress, its content unknown. Her family have been informed that the investigation relates to an issue of ‘national security’.
It is hard to understand how a young mother and her small child on holiday could be considered an issue of national security. She has been to Iran to visit her family regularly since making Britain her home.
Nazanin currently works as a project manager for the Thomson-Reuters Foundation; which delivers charitable projects around the world. It does not work in Iran.
Nazanin has now been in solitary confinement for over 30 days.
Please help bring my wife and daughter home by signing my petition calling on our Prime Minister Theresa May to use her power and intervene.
Justice for Chunky - stop people who abuse animals from owning ever again
This petition is for Chunky the Chihuahua who was attacked for hours in what the RSPCA called one of the most disturbing cases of animal abuse they had ever seen.
Chunky was, over a period of hours, beaten and drugged, his neck was broken, he was set on fire and finally he was dumped and left for dead.
Despite serious injury, and against all odds, Chunky lived. The people who committed this abuse were only banned from keeping animals for five years. As an animal lover, who once owned a dog just like Chunky, I found this story highly upsetting. What shocked me is that these abusers and others like them will be able to own an animal again one day.
There’s nothing to prevent them doing this again. I'm asking that anyone who abuses animals, regardless of their age, be placed on an Animal Cruelty Register which would follow them for life.
In some states in the US they already have animal abuse registries. If this had happened in New York these abusers would have to sign onto an animal abuse list that would prevent them from ownership of animals. The UK need to introduce a similar law.
A five year ban is not sufficient-- it is hard to implement in practice and why do we assume abusers attitudes will have changed after a few years? Our legal system should have an animal abuse list so that we are aware of people who have mistreated animals. Please sign this petition for an animal abuse register. Let's get justice for dogs like Chunky.
Scrap Smart Motorways
The BBC’s Panorama programme found that there have been twenty times more near-misses on the M25 since the introduction of so-called ‘smart motorways’. This is where the hard shoulder is used as a driving lane. 38 people have been killed on these motorways in 5 years. Smart motorways must be urgently scrapped before any more people lose their lives.
I’m a lorry driver and I drive up and down these motorways every day. I’ve seen cars stranded on these roads and it is incredibly dangerous for them to be a sitting duck next to traffic travelling at 70mph and more. It can be deadly.
It can take up to 17 minutes for highways authorities to notice you have broken down in a lane of live traffic and to display a Red Cross above the lane to indicate to other road users not to use that lane, during that time cars and trucks are still approaching you from behind at some speed! If a car or worse a truck was to hit you at this point, it would have catastrophic results.
My wife drives a 3 door car, and we have 2 small children. So if she was to break down on a smart motorway, she is expected to come to a stop in a live lane, get out of the vehicle, get one child out of the back (which means having the door wide open whilst leaning into the back of the car), run to the barrier and leave one child unattended at the barrier whilst she then returns to the vehicle to get the second child. All whilst hoping not to be hit from behind.
All this could be avoided if there was simply an emergency lane - hard shoulder. It’s just safer!
Please sign this in support of bringing back hard shoulders. Must we really compromise our safety just to try get somewhere a little faster? Removing hard shoulders to try ease congestion is not safe. Put them back please to prevent more accidents!
End of tampon tax
The Treasury vowed to axe the outdated and overtly sexist tax on tampons, sanitary pads and mooncups in January 2016. WE WON! By March we made history when Parliament accepted a tampon-tax-ending amendment proposed by the amazing Paula Sherriff MP. Following Brexit complications, this amendment will be implemented by 2022 at the very latest. That sucks. But we're on it! We've launched a new project called 'Period Watch' to keep an eye on the Government and SMASH the period taboo in the meantime! Our new petition can also be signed here to help reduce this deadline date. Period!
We need to make sure we no longer tax period products on luxurious, “non-essential” grounds, but not helicopters, the maintenance of our private jets, or crocodile steaks. Even President Obama has coined the tax 'shocking' and 'unfair'.
If you value the functioning of those who menstruate at least as much as you enjoy your flying crocodile Fridays then sign our petition and join our campaign. Help to put an end to the marginalisation of issues traditionally associated with women by demanding a zero tax rate for sanitary products.
Periods are no luxury. You can ‘opt-in’ to extravagance. You cannot choose to menstruate. Despite this, a whole heap of disadvantages have been created for those who do. Not using sanitary products can lead to health risks, jeopardise maintaining a normal, professional or personal life, and result in public ridicule. Equally, by using sanitary products, our Government capitalises on misogynist discourse and period shame that has caused us to fear our own menstrual cycles. It’s a double-edged sword that cuts women on both sides.
Tax allocations should expose the needs of society as a whole, and the needs of those who menstruate as well as those who don’t. Because we care about these people, this campaign was made in support of tax allocations representing them and reflecting something that is vital.
Philip Hammond, sanitary products should join your list of essential, tax exempt products, which include “helicopters” (and “aircraft repair and maintenance”), “alcoholic jellies” and “exotic meats including crocodile and kangaroo”. While we can live without flying our own private helicopters, we cannot live without the public participation of those who menstruate, which is dependent upon the accessibility of sanitary products.
We hope you support and join our campaign!
